I’ve been working hard finishing up the first semester of school, so haven’t had time to update this blog.  Here are a variety of assignments I’ve been doing at school recently.

Master copies, ink, figure drawing, oil painting, pencil portraits, the whole 9 yards.

Busy, Busy

I started training at The Art Department  in February, so it’s been about a month of foundations classes so far.  I’m really digging the program; lots of great teachers, the classes are going great, and I really like the other students, as well.  I am well outside my comfort zone, learning a variety of new traditional techniques and mediums that I’ve never explored before.  I couldn’t ask for a better place to be learning the art of picture making, and I get to stay here in Austin to boot. Who woulda thunk it.

Here is a little appetizer sampler plate of some of the art I’ve been working on for the past month:

Composition & Color Theory Class:

Black and White Abstract images to communicate Emotion

Sketchbook Class:

Lots of various sketching assignments:

My first gouache painting ever.  I love painting and now I’m really excited about this medium after trying it out in my sketchbook.  It has a very loose quality to it and it dries super quickly so it’s perfect for a sketchbook.  After seeing Erik Tiemens’ gouache paintings I know this is a medium I am going to enjoy for a very long time.

Live Figure Drawing 3/11/11:

I am really happy with the creeper image, one of the best figures I’ve done yet.  Goran Photobombed one of my shots.

Figure Class:

Nupastel Chalk figure drawings for John English & Jane Radstrom’s figure drawing class.  I love this technique and am learning so much, but I have a whole lot more to learn in order to get proper proportions and rendering.  It will be great to look back at the end of the semester and see how far I’ve come from this point.

Media Class:

Fetchin Master Copy

Light & Form Class:

Value study and quick master copy.

Perspective Class:

Quick sketch of a playstation 3 for form analysis

Cezanne & Pisarro studies

These paintings were done in Elizabeth Locke’s oil painting classes here in Austin.  She is a great painter and a phenomenal teacher, you can find her website here: http://www.austinartclasses.com/Austin-Fine-Art-Classes/Austin-Fine-Art-Classes.html

A new oil painting I’m working on based off a Cezanne still life.  Here’s the underpainting.  I’m happy with how it’s turning out.

And here is an oil painting that is a  Pissaro still life study.

October Work

This is some previous 2D work that I did in the month of October in order to get into The Art Department here in Austin, TX.  I will be attending the school in February to focus on Entertainment Design and Conceptual Art.

Digital value study  done in Photoshop. Based off of photo ref of the bellydancer Zoe.

Digital painting based off of a photo of the late, great reggae singer Gregory Isaacs, who passed away 2 weeks after I painted this. 😦

A digital mood study of a fantasy themed environment, done in PS.

Traditional oil painting based off of a Hopper seascape.
